Firstborn son but not the only one I walked the narrow road, alone. Second son comes doesn't look like his dad or his mom and his Church shoes scuff. Pass the curse like a cup two parts body one part blood, every day you feel a little more stuck. When I went to find my brother, he was stumbling under the neon lights downtown. Eyes rolled back with a filter of foam on his mouth. What a shame, what a shame, and I reach out but I know that he chose his way. The burden feels light long as you don’t think about it trust me, you’re gonna miss it if you leave. You fashioned me this way and suddenly you’re displeased with the thing that you made. The firstborn son and how we wish he was the only one a tragedy of eighteen years a legacy undone. Church shoes scuff. Drink a curse with the bread and the cup I can’t pull myself back up. (You fashioned me this way and suddenly you’re displeased with the thing that you have made an Inheritance of shame For all the sons of Adam turning in their graves).

She said look for the mailbox tied up with green balloons. “It’s his favorite color” she laughed; you thought it was blue. Haven’t seen ‘em in a year and a half and you feel like such a fool showing up on his birthday, who’s gonna wanna talk to you? You say you wanna change but something else just keeps on getting in your way. Every lonely day you know you’re only getting further from it. You think she seems a little nicer since the settlement ended, and you wonder “just how irreconcilable were those differences?” But you know its just a dry spell, soon enough it’s gonna pass. She lets you pick him up from school you take a stiff shot from your flask. Somewhere in your mind you’re sitting on a permanent vacation where you never met the bitch, there’s no one to complain. Just surfing through the television stations. Somewhere in your mind, you tell yourself you did the best you could. You say it’s not your fault families fall apart but you can’t face up to yourself in the dark. It’s all a scam two birds in the hand, you’ve turned into a cruel and calloused man. You float away on a drink and press the barrel to your head but you won’t do it.

Take off your necklace lay it on the table. Interlock my fingers lead me down the hall. Suddenly I realize that I’m surrounded. I see all the moving pieces flowing lazy like a fountain: Deer in the grass and plane overheard. Keys and wallet on the kitchen counter we collapse onto your bed. Monday morning I’m wanting again, the vacancy shaped likes a puzzle piece that no one seems to fit. I see your tee shirt rise and fall across your chest. It takes me out like a kid at the movies the longing in my eyes so evident. Monday morning I wonder again “is there any hope left for me, so caught up like this?” Take off your necklace lay it on the table. Interlock my fingers make my world feel small. Suddenly I realize she can make me crumble as if there were nothing that I could have done at all.

Life will never satisfy. It stretches you out to fill its own divide. It throbs and twitches under the incubation light and gives birth to a vessel with cold empty eyes. Every day I pay the interest on debt I did not incur. In hope that you will summon up forgiveness from some gracious corner of your spirit. When I see you I call out just loud enough that you might not turn around. If you already know all the blasphemous thoughts in my heart can we just split the check and leave in separate cars. Clean my teeth until they sparkle in the mirror please let me go home. And if you won't close the windows and fill the room with smoke, I gave it my best and it wasn't enough.

The birds will sing all night between the apple blossom trees. The darkness will obscure the shades of pink and green. Our little house will sit in the silence of midnight the dogs will sleep in the glow of the stove light. And when I see them kiss on TV I can almost feel your lips surround me. Won’t you come and nestle near me until we both turn into one. Light a candle on the landing I’ll come meet you when I’m ready. Keep me longing, keep me steady, I feel mercy in your touch.
